Constantine II busts
« on: November 26, 2014, 03:34:25 pm »
Hello,

I have a question about Constantine II busts for Trier mint.

Concerning the coin RIC 277, Constantine II bust left, cuirassed. (bust C4l in RIC).
and the RIC 276, Constantine II bust left, draped and cuirassed. (bust C3l).

I've never seen it only cuirassed bust C4l for Trier mint ...
Does it exist?

I've never seen one. RIC 277 is referenced to the BM, but I could not find the coin in their online database. Many of their coins are not posted online, however. Would someone in London be so kind as to go to the British Museum and find it?  :)

Thank you for your help.
And it is a good idea,
if someone has the opportunity to go to the British Museum,
I'd be grateful to him.
(I live in France and I can not go to London)

Hello PYL,
I can see two different bust types in your pics.
The first is with drap at the chest and cuirassed, whereas the second is fully cuirassed.
The horizontal lines at the chest On the Second coin are part of cuirass.
Kindest  regards
Mogon

That's what I thought at first.
Then I had a doubt .
And if it was a simple interpretation of the same bust by different recorder ?
As I have no other images to compare ... I ask myself .
On it , the drape is processed in a different way.

Thank you for being you addressed the issue.

The only difference in the busts on the two coins that you originally posted would appear to be that one the upper the lines on the chest between the two shoulders run in downward curves while on the second they run straight across.

In my view that is not enough variation to assign a different bust code too.

Unfortunately the terms draped and draped & cuirassed are somewhat confusing.  They are are of course not original terms.  Second, they are not applied consistantly by every author.  We can hope that individual authors use them in the same way but that is not the case for everyone.

But I would assume that both these were what RIC called C4.

You may be right.
Maybe I'm looking for where there is no problem .
In any case, thank you for your help.
