Probus ant. Ticinum
« on: January 25, 2013, 01:27:46 pm »
Hi,

Can anybody help with a reference for this Probus antoninianus from Ticinum please. It is around RIC 374ff but is the left facing radiate nude "heroic" bust holding forward spear and aegis known for the reverse type? Sadly looks to have patina flaking around the edge.

Regards,

Mauseus

Probus.net:

RIC 377 variant, Ticinum.. Denomination: Antoninianus.
Not listed for this bust type in RIC.

Try RIC 376. 377 has the INVICTI legend.

Hi,

Close Pekka, same bust type but different obverse legend VIRTVS PROBI AVG compared to VIRTVS PROBI INVICTI AVG on the specimen from Probus.net

And yes, it is a variant forwards of RIC 374, as noted in the first post.

Is it in the BNF catalogue or La Venera (or recorded anywhere else for that matter)?

Hi,

Cheers Martin, I see a couple of examples of this type in the listing now. So a known type then. Not a keeper for me, I don't think.

The Probus contents of both the Paris collection and the Venera hoard have not yet been published, unless we go back to the nineteenth century that is, when Cohen published the Paris collection and Milani published a very detailed and competent inventory of the entire Venera hoard.

Thanks Curtis, I thought I was missing one La Venera volume.
