help with Gallienvs Zoo coin " panther " reverse
« on: August 17, 2008, 04:30:14 pm »
I just added this to my gallery  along with several more zoo coins,

 AE 22 mm 2.9 grams 253-268 AD
OBV  ::  GALLIENVS AVG. Radiate head right
REV  ::  LIBERO dot P dot CONS AVG. Stripped tigress walking left
EX    ::  B
RIC V-1, Rome 230

can anyone confirm  this attribution ???  as I am unsure of the first dot  in LIBERO dot P dot CONS AVG

and if in fact it is a tigress,  or a panther.

I am pretty sure  I'm correct,  but  some reassurance  would be great

RIC 230 is correct.

Another reference is Cunetio 1341.  There were 198 specimens in the Cunetio Hoard, which gives you a fairly good idea how common it is.

Thanks Steve..

from what I was told,  all 5 of these coins (  the zoo coins  in my gallery ) were from the Cunetio Hoard....

any plates or references that will not cost me a fortune  available to check this that you know of ?

Well, there is seldom more than one of each type illustrated, so it is no surprise that yours is not the plate example.  Was there documented provenance to back up the claim?  If not, I'd presume it was just hot air.

No provenance,  but a reliable dealer.....  oh  well ,  they do have very nice patina,  but  since I never held hoard patina in hand, I'm  not sure if this is what it's supposed to  looks like .....

But  I've wanted  these zoo coins for some time. So this is definately a start..:  I will keep scouring Joe's catalog,  and as very nice examples become avail.  I'll snag them up.  This is a side focus,  that I can afford as the coins are not overly expensive

I'll keep the attribution as is  without stating Cunetio hoard since  there is no proof  to this  :(

Thanks for all the help Steve

cheers

Your coins cannot come from the Cunetio Hoard because the entire hoard was kept by the British Museum: "The whole of this find has been acquired by the British Museum to preserve this rich and unrivalled body of material for future research"  (The Cunetio Treasure, Preface).

Maybe your coin dealer merely cited the Cunetio Hoard as a reference, without meaning to imply that the coins offered actually derived from that hoard?

Yes, 54,951 coins in the complete hoard, but a type represented by 198 specimens is a common typeRARE types had fewer than, say, five specimens in the hoard, or maybe none at all.

It's fully published, as "The Cunetio Treasure, Roman coinage of the Third Century AD".  It is pretty hard to get hold of though.

@Curtis:

You do have the best contacts to the British Museum, I assume.

Do you reckon you couls persuade them to do a reprint of the Cunetio Hoard book?  ;)

I am quite sure it will sell like hell!  ;D

A great site about the zoo coins can be found here:

http://www.lunalucifera.com/Zoo/index.html

It also discusses whether it is a tigress or panther on the LIBERO P AVG coins and has percentages for the reverse types found in the Cunetio Hoard.

It's a very useful site if you want to form a menagerie of these coins.
