English Silver coin ID help?
-
Hi Epmunt -
I'm no expert, but the legend seems to indicate Edward II - or maybe Edward III. I can't tell the mint from the reverse image. My book is an OLD one... I have converted to PDF if you want a copy, send me as message; I can xfer the file to you.
What is the size? If the coin is a farthing, you can look here:

Hi epmunt
I'm no expert on these either, but I'm pretty sure the reverse reads CIVI-TAS-DVN-[ELM], for Durham, and I can't find a halfpenny or farthing for Durham in my old (1990) Seaby's, so it is probably a penny.
The obverse reads [ED]WARRAN[G...] which (if I read Seabys correctly) suggests a type 10 of Edward I or type 11 of Edward II.
Hopefully someone more expert will correct me.
Best wishes
Alan

I'll have to check later; I'm at work right now and away from my books.

It is a penny if it is silver as it appears, if you really want to have fun, try identifying a half one! I'll check my books also when I get home, but Robert has a 6 hour lead on me!

I've been so shattered I've only just got to the point of looking at this, but with the double R and the A with narrow sides (what do you call them - they aren't verticals?), then as far as I can see it's a Class 10b penny of Edward I.
