Oto kuzyn tej monety!

Thanks, Ben!

I list this variety for RIC VI ROME 313-344 only in "Corrigenda":

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric/cv6.html#6rom313-344 (see part: (c) Sol with chlamys hanging behind)

But I haven't yet any example for Maximinus. Do you know the weight and the diameter of this coin?

It was sold on eBay for $20.13 in Sept 2012, with the information given as 21mm 3.805g (it's not my coin).

Kolejna moneta z tegorocznych aktualizacji.
Trier, Konstantyn Wielki, CLARITAS REIPVBLICAE z kolekcji Nicoli Tammaro

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric/7tri-150_1d_a.html

https://www.nummus-bible-database.com/rechercher-une-monnaie.htm?page=1&personnages=12&ateliers=&collections=&vendeurs=&motscles=&numric=&numnbd=&legendes=11&nombreResultats=10&btRechercher=Rechercher

Monetka Konstantyna I wybita w Ticinum z bardzo rzadkim przedstawieniem Marsa "Mars standing facing, holding spear and shield".

No i jeszcze są odmiany nieodkryte.

This is unlisted, but mentioned in RIC VI p.477 - cast in Vienna.

Here is another unlisted coin from same issue.

Sold on eBay for $102.71 on 5-2011. 28mm 9.263g.

Note unexpected "IV" vs "VI".

eBay [link wykorzystany i usunięty]

You are right. According to Sutherland, this could be a separate issue associated with SISCIA 187-188 (VI in l. field, officina letter in r. field). But Siscia is a mint with many anomalies. "VI" changes its place frequently and I am not sure if there are so many separate issues or only few issues with minor varieties. These engravers from Siscia had really unpredictable intentions.

Yes, the "VI" position can move to either side of main character (Iovi/etc), although on this type the space in the center is more obvious. The officina letter moving from exergue to the field seems deliberate though.

The officina letter moving from exergue to the field seems deliberate though.

This move is undoubtedly deliberate for Group III. But in Group II there are some strange anomalies. According to Sutherland variety with officina letter in field (and SIS alone in exergue) is the last stage, short and rare, in Group II. But there is also an unlisted Perpetuitas issue? variety? minted for Severus as Caesar, i.e. before July 306.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric/6sis-188.html

So all these coins from Group II with officina letter in field could be regarded as varieties. It seems that there are no hard rules in Siscia  :-[

A jaki sens mają półksiężyce albo gwiazdki?

I think this may be wrong.

There's an interesting coin of Severus caesar on your "Not In RIC" site who's mintmark seems to have gone unnoticed. The left field should just have an officina letter, but it actually seems to be  :crescent: over  :Greek_Gamma: making it an unlisted issue, which logically should follow the VI - :crescent: SACR MONET.

It then follows that the SIS VI-A issue should immediately follow this, and be the 2nd issue of this type, not the last as Sutherland suggests. The long legends for Severus on these specimens (FL VAL SEVERVS NOB C[AES], vs short SEVERVS NOB C[AES]) also makes more sense as the initial legend used by Severus, not the last.

Since the PROVIDENT DEORVM type appears to start *without* the S-F in field, it therefore seems most logical that the S-F version comes last (changing the RIC order).

Here's what the issues looks like with this suggested order (click to expand).

This coin is certainly not great and the picture is not great too but I am pretty sure that this specimen shares reverse die with that from officina A. So, consequently, I believe that there is no ridiculously small crescent over ridiculously small gamma but heavily distorted "A" (picture attached).

Your order of issues seems to be somehow logical. However, its biggest weakness is that for the second and the third row (issues SIS VI-u/A and SIS VI-A) only few unique specimens are attested.

The probability of an engraver's error (or sloppiness) is still very high.

Yes, it seems you're right.

However, its biggest weakness is that for the second and the third row (issues SIS VI-u/A and SIS VI-A) only few unique specimens are attested.

It seems we have at least 3 types and 4 dies with the officina in field, which seems too much to be a mistake, and since the previous issue (SACR MONET) had officina in exergue, it's hard to explain this officina placement (and ugly off-center "VI" placement) as "forgot what I was doing" sloppiness.

Dies:
S2 Concordia (maybe same die as RIC Daia)
S2 Perpetvitas
Dio Prov Deor "VI"
Max Prov Deor "IV"

Assuming this was a deliberate issue, then maybe it was so short lived because it really didn't work very well ("VI" squeezed in, doesn't look good) for the PROV DEOR reverse ! It's also possible that PROV DEOR S-F was the next issue and forced the change (can't fit VI + S + F + officina all in field), although it would seem unnatural to add the S-F then drop it again in next issue. It's interesting to see the presence of the S-F at Severus's other mints: Rome and Aquileia are all S-F, Ticinum has no S-F.

Ben
