help with 1 letter on CARVS coin
Johnny:
could use a second opinion on this letter found on a coin of CARVS, It looks like a B but I can't find any references for this mark on this type of coin....
the letter is from the obverse side of a VIRTVS AVGG ( i THINK ) and sits between the 2 figures above the exergue
could be a B, :Greek_epsilon: :GreeK_Sigma:
any help would be appreciated
cheers
Johnny:
oops, forgot the pics of the coin..
the coin is still very dirty and has an incredibly hard patina,
Ed D:
Hi Johnny, it looks like RIC 125c, Carus receiving Victory from Jupiter, E/XXI star above. VIRTVS AVGGG.
Regards Eddop
Johnny:
AVGGG means this would be a joint reign with 3 emperors
Carus Numerian and Carinus thus making the date 283 ???...humm
been doing some reading on Carvs fairly interesting stuff, short, but interesting..
as far as your reply goes, thank you , and I think you are right, it does look like an E over the XXI......haven't seent the star yet. there is a lump higher up, but I'm not sure if it's a patina build-up or a star
I'll keep you posted after I figure out how to clean this one better
Ed D:
Hi Johnny maybe Doug Smith's article is interesting to you:
