Septimus Severus Sestertius
(1/1)
Jerome Holderman:
This may be one for Mr. Clay, in this worn condition with almost no visible legend, I think my only hope for a 100% positive ID may be a die match to one from his casts or Archives.
Obviously it is a Septimus Severus sestertius
Head right / Victory left
31mm, 19.9gm
But if any one is certain of the legends / RIC reference etc. It would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jerome
curtislclay:
Jerome,
Since the obv. legend begins with IMP, it can only be of AD 193,
IMP CAES L SEPT SEV PERT AVG / VICT AVG TR P COS S C,
RIC 656.
Yours,
Curtis
Jerome Holderman:
Super! Thanks!
curtislclay:
Both of those dies are in my 1972 thesis, but not in that combination.
A published spec. from the same rev. die, but a different obv. die: Glasgow 114, pl. 8.
