SOLI INVICTO COMITI
(1/1)
rick fox:
Constantine family coin. Of this I am sure, though my eyes are not up to being able to make out the inscription on the obverse.
I can make out SOL on the reverse so I know it is a SOLI INVICTO COMITI
Severely off struck on the reverse.
Can anyone tell me more?
Heliodromus:
Based on bust style, I'd say it's from Rome dating to 316-317. The obverse legend is IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG.

Frans Diederik:
Ben is right (on the nose) This crooked sniffer id typical of Rome. Btw do I see an 'R' in the exergue?
Frans
rick fox:
This coin is about 3/4" wide.
Helveticas Spreadsheets list the coins with this obv and rev as:
Follis: Too small
Antoninianus:
Sestertius:
Light Follis:
As I said the coin is 3/4" (19.5 mm). This is listed as the size of an AE3. (Domination changes make my head hurt). If this helps it is the same size as a denari.
Should I assume this is RIC VI?
Heliodromus:
You can refer to bronze coins either by the name of the denomination or by the size. The denomination name for this coin is nummus (aka follis), and by size it's an AE3. The nummus/follis shrunk considerably in size & weight over it's history, so "light follis" is just referring to that.
Any bronze coin of Constatine I is either a nummus (or fraction of a nummus) or a centenionalis (introduced c. 318-319). The Sestertius and Antoninianus were earlier denominations that has been discontinued before Constantine's time.
The attribution for this coin is probably RIC VII Rome 57, assuming it's a laureate cuirassed bust (not seen from reverse), and assuming there's no captive beside Sol (there's a hint of one, but I tend to think it's just due to the appearance of the patina/surface deposits).
The dividng line between RIC VI and RIC VII is the death of Maximinus II, which occured in 313, so you'd find this coin in RIC VII due to the 316-317 date. Note though that Constantine's SOLI INVICTO COMITI type started c. 310, so his earliest coins with this same legend fall into RIC VI.
