Magnetinus AE22?
« on: January 03, 2007, 02:09:14 pm »
Dear Friends

Please help me with the ID of this AE22, 4.3g.
I was told it could be a Magnetinus follis.

Please help. I would be happy about a reference number.

Best wishes,
Burak

Definitely Magnentius, with the chi-rho reverse, but without a mintmark I don't think we can go further.

Yes it´s Magnentius. You have to rotate 180º the reverse, but i can´t see the mintmark, too.

Guys, how you can  distinguish so definitely between Decentius and Magnentius?
The large chi-rho was also on coins of  Poemenius in the name of Constantius II
(Trier mint)  but, luckily,  the portrait of the latter looks quite different.
Though the characters PF  are visible and so the legend should end AVG, hence,  Magnentius...

I can see only the tops of three letters in the exergue.  The bust style is most similar to Lyon or Trier.  My best guess, based on the tops of those letters, is Lyon with the LG being the last two letters I can see.  That's the best I can do for you.

It has to be Magnentius not Decentius since the legible inscription ends in -INVS PF-. What would a Caesar be doing with PF? The following letter looks supiciously like the A of AVG.
