"Thanks, Din, for your informative posts but I still don't know why you believe that Rauch medallion (second picture in this thread) is authentic?"

To find same scratch on modern die fakes is actually not making sense, same scratch is only making sense for transfer die, cast and electrotype fakes.

I agree, but why you believe that Rauch medallion is NOT made from transfered/copied die? Was it a prototype for other coins or it is just a separate authentic coin of the same type?

These are transfer die fakes so there must be an authentic mother and the Rauch piece looks most convincing of all of them so it is most likely the authentic mother.
If in future another one from the same dies with same scratch appears with even better details and even more convincing looking, then this new better looking one would be authentic mother and Rauch example a transfer die fake.
Till then the best one, in this case Rauch specimen should be considered to be the authentic mother.

If only the Rauch piece would exist, would you still doubt it and if yes why?
it is not the fault of the authentic mother that she was abused to create transfer die fakes:(

I am inclined to agree that the Rauch piece looks most convincing. It is not an obvious fake and this fact was one of my reasons to make this thread.

But how the transfer die from Rauch piece was possible? There are so many marks of double strike that it is impossible to hide them without preparing a big part of a new die from scratch. Does it make sense? If forger was so clever, he could make a good die without prototype. Just looking at the good big picture.

If only the Rauch piece would exist, would you still doubt it and if yes why?

Probably not. But very good fakes are often not exposed until few specimens hit the market.
