Otacilia Severa - PIETAS AVGVSTES - engraving error?
« on: September 09, 2011, 08:35:03 am »
Hi,
This coin has rev. leg. PIETAS AVGVSTES. RIC notes, apart from the normal and correct female singular gen. 'augustae' a variant leg. 'auguste', but not 'augustes'. I am not very well schooled in Latin, so I am not sure if this legend makes any grammatical sense. But I suspect this must be an engraving error. Any thoughts appreciated.

Otacilia Severa, wife of Philip I AD 244-249, AR antoninianus
OTACIL SEVERA AVG; Diad. and dr. bust on crescent r.
PIETAS AVGVSTES (sic); Pietas stg. left, raising r.hand and holding perfume box
RIC 130 var. (AVGVSTAE); RSC 43 var. (same); 23.5mm; 3.85g; good very fine

Regards
Gert

The error seems hard to explain. AVGVSTES is meaningless, simply an error.

Was that erroneous TES influenced by PIETAS earlier in the same legend? Or was the engraver thinking of one of the contemporaneous types of Philip I, SAECVLARES AVGG Column or FIDES EXERCITVS?
