Hadrian Tetradrachm
« on: June 08, 2018, 04:20:38 pm »
Hello all, I recently acquired this Hadrian tetradrachm, but now that I have it in hand I am a little concerned. It's about the right size and weight (14g, 26mm), but something about the look of it (the sort of recessed ring around the reverse, for instance, make me wonder if it could be a cast), and just the look of it (none of the other tetradrachms I've handled had a patina like this - not even a hint of any silver content). The edge also has a small area that isn't uniform with the rest, but it doesn't exactly look like filing. Would anyone more experienced with these types be willing to take a look and share their opinion?

I'm not exactly sure how to figure the die axis, to be honest. But if you position the obverse straight and turn it around, the reverse will be slightly tilted to the left, but almost correctly oriented.

Looks like it's about 11 to 11.5, so almost 12/180.

It looks good to me--perhaps there was a lump of crud on the edge since cleaned off.
