Title: Need help identifying a curious gold object
Post by: Tanit on July 27, 2021, 05:57:56 pm
Hello

I think it's Byzantine and it's gold.

It weighs 23 gr. and measures 25 x 40 mm.

Does anyone have any idea what this is?

Thanks for your help

While the dot decoration looks a bit like some early medieval stuff found amongst the Byzantines, great Bulgarians, etc. the rectangular shape doesn't match.  Also, I believe that the design of the rings on the top and back looks very modern.

I think any resemblance to Byzantine is simply a coincidence.

Are you sure that it is a solid gold? Or maybe rather thin gold plate. 23 gr  = circa 1 cubic centimeter of gold
