Philip I. Ant
« on: September 19, 2006, 02:11:53 pm »
Philippus I. Antoninianus, early 245 AD, Rome.
Obv: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind.
Rev: ADVENTVS AVGG, Philip on horse pacing left, raising right hand and holding spear.
Ø 20-21 mm, 4.86 g
RIC IV, Part 3, 26b

The pic is a bit overexposed, unfortunately, but the coin is FDC in hand: superb shiny and glossy surfaces, no hint of wear. I've always wanted an extra nice Philip I. ant and when I saw this one for sale, I just had to go for it.

Hi,

Lovely portrait and you are too critical of the exposure - it looks very pleasing on my screen. That is a very attractive example.

Hi Lars,

I think I would have gone for it too, even already having a nice sestertius and tetradrachm of the fellow. It's the perfect antoninianus

Very good purchase
Congrats

The type can be more closely dated to early in 245, the other types of the issue being LIBERALITAS AVGG II, P M TR P II COS P P Emperor seated on curule chair, and SECVRIT ORBIS.

The interpretation seems clear: the emperors have just arrived in Rome from the East and distribute their second largesse on the occasion.  So we should date their arrival in Rome to early 245.  There is an inscription generally taken to indicate that they were already in Rome by July 244, but that interpretation is by no means necessary, in my opinion.

ADVENTVS AVGG is a common type, but historically interesting, and that is certainly a choice specimen of the antoninianus!

Thank you all, and my special thanks to Curtis for your specification of the minting date - I've corrected it in the description of the coin.
