Angelina Jolie to Portray Cleopatra
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:54:59 pm »
I heard it on the radio yesterday and it was confirmed on imdb.com that Angie is set to portray Cleopatra in a movie to be released in 2013.  Could be interesting.  Wonder if she will have a vial of blood around her neck!  LOL!

I agree with you here, but we must remember that a big-budgeted Cleo film starring a less than stunning actress could never be made. The modern conception of Cleo in the mainstream is that she was very beautiful, and that this was a major component of her guile and charm. Relatively few of us actually know that she was probably not exceptionally beautiful by our modern standards, and we also have the image of the gorgeous Liz Taylor as Cleo indelibly burned into our minds, which has set the standard for any portrayal that comes after it. I actually think that Jolie could be a good fit here, because although she is quite beautiful, she has great depth as an actress and a very healthy dark side to her personality that I feel would lend itself well to portraying the ruthlessness and cunning of Cleo.

Just "Cleopatra" as of this date -http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0914843/.  Yes she is too beautiful but this is Hollywood you know.  She pulled off Achilles mother, Thetis, so maybe she has found her niche!

Compare an image of Cleopatra from one of her coins with the image on the
American Susan B. Anthony dollar coin.

LOL! You're right. The similarity is striking.

Plus, her last name is Anthony, modern equivalent of Cleo's last Hubby's surname!! Ok, my mind is officially being blown.  ;D

Cool!  ;D

However I think that Cleopatra's portrait on her coinage reflects a certain amount of Antony's features.  Compare the above with a portrait of Antony (I hope Benito doesn't mind me posting his coin):

I hear it is based on Patricia Southern's book.  If it sticks closely to her line of reasoning that Antony was calculating and intelligent in his decisions it will be a good movie.  If it portray's Antony as a love sick sap (as he's always portrayed) then it will be just another bad Historical movie.

I also see that David Fincher will be directing this upcoming film - one of the best directors alive.

Too bad it will be one of those historical films almost totally lacking in fact.

p.s. I am not an Angelina Jolie fan so now I have two valid reasons not to see this one.
