Marcus Aurelius denarius?, please help
« on: March 31, 2009, 10:38:36 am »
Hola and sorry, the coin is very worn, but I can't  find in my references the combination of the legends, can somebody help me?.
I believe read

Obv: ANTONINVS (AVG ARMINIACVS)? - Laureate head r.
Rev: (            SO)? AVG TR P XVIII - emperor standing left, sacrificing on altar? - COS III in exerge.
I don't have their diameter or weight, because the coin didn't still arrive. Again sorry
any help will be grateful.
Saludos

Hi Mario

I searched it in RIC and Cohen but I have found no references. Are sure of the obverse 'ARMENIACVS'?

Hi Mario,

I've tried, but I can't find your coin anywhere. Sorry that this is not much help but at least you know that you are not being ignored.  ;D

Alex.

The coin is clearly unofficial, an ancient imitation.

Still, those are usually copied from official coins.

However I can think of no reverse type like yours on any official coin.  Did the counterfeiter simply invent this rev. type?

The coin looks like a fourree...notice the crack in the silver plating at 11 o'clock on the obv and what appears to be a bronze core at 12 o'clock on the reverse.

Fascinating that the forger would come up with a new type!

Hi all,
Thanks for yours answers (included yours Alex  ;D ), is very interesting that this type of reverse doesn't exist, I had never seen an ancient imitation where a new design was invented. Do I know the hybrid ones, but should the obverse and reverse exist in the coinage of some contemporary or previous Emperor, truth?. It is strange, on the other hand, I coincide with David, the coin seems fourree.
I will continue with the intrigue until the coin arrives.
Thank you again.

Hi all again
I already have the coin in my hands.
well, It is not fourree, what you see in the breaks is only dirt (See the detail of the break).

2.3 gr. 18 mm
Obv: ANTONINVS AVG ARMENIACVS - laur. head r.
Rev: C(ONCO)RD?? AVG TR P XVIII - Marcus Aurelius standing left, sacrificing over altar.Exe: COS(III)??
I am not convinced that the forger has invented a new reverse. Maybe a reverse of another emperor?. Which is your opinion?
Any help will be welcome
