What type of coin is this?
« on: November 01, 2015, 01:35:59 am »
It's a smooth coin with some striations (on one side especially). The coin is 19mm in diameter. It doesn't look to be stamped but rather painted. It's made of a non-ferrous material possibly copper or bronze. I've never seen any markings or language font/text like this. There's some green oxidation within/on the indentation..I was wondering if it could possibly be a forgery..I haven't seen a coin quite like it before..any information would be helpful..thanks in advance..

Looks to be an early Islamic coin.

Thanks for the reply..

I suspected Jewish or perhaps Asian at first..but you are right..I see the Islam - Muslim style of writing on it.. lol my knowledge of world history and how it relates to religion is hazy at best :)  I know Muslim is relative to a person who practices Islam?..and the coin looks like it relates to maybe an ancient Indian specimen..so..if it is an early Islamic I guess the question would be how early..also could it be a temple token?..

Thanks again..

I don't think it is Indian, but from the Middle East.  I think mid-700's to early 800's.

Andrew , I will be glad to read what is on it .
May that help.
But I need  better photos as much as you can.
The ones you have right now are too poor to read.

Mohammed Messenger of Allah      محمد رسول الله

IMG_ 20151102_204943

Allah Al- Samad.           الله الصمد

Al – Samad in perfect Arabic is one of the 99 names of God.

God in Arabic has 99 names ( Allah is one of them ) , most of it come from making the verb in superior  action

like from the word strong , it would be The strongest .
Great , The greatest.

High , The highest …..

Here Al-Samad  الصمد  is from verb has no English verb in exact (To intent to him . God , with your needs to be taken care of )
Al- Samad  does not need any thing to be alive at the time every one else needs him.
Was not born or gave a birth , and perfect in every thing .

Thank you for the information.

Could the coin here be considered a very/extremely "rare" coin?

Thanks Howard and Sam for the information.

Sam I had a quick question if your around..

Which of the sides of the coin reads:   "Mohammed Messenger of Allah      محمد رسول الله" ..?..and is that the obverse (heads side; which I'm guessing it is, or the opposite of such being the tales or "rear" side?)..the first four illustrations in the second set of pics posted or the last one in the second set..

and which is the side that reads: "Allah Al- Samad.    الله الصمد
" would that be the the last photo in the second set of pics posted..and would that be the obverse or heads side?..(I'm guessing it isn't..

in any regard thanks in advance again

Andrew with the coin in the condition it is in, it is not worth a lot.  It is most likely an anonymous fulus from the early years of Islam.
