Dear friends of Nikopolis!
Important: All coins with a number higher than #041 are transferred to Nikopolis Addenda #7!
The chase goes on. This thread should be seen as supplement and integral part of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum, edition 2018.
#001
A new type for Nikopolis
Anonymous issue, 1st-3rd century AD
AE 12, 0.70g, 12.02mm, 180°
obv. Female figure, in long garment, stg. r.

ref. Not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):
cf. No. 8.(?).0.48.6 (Tyche with rudder stg, l.)

It is discussed wether these items are coins at all or rather temple tokens. Most of them are holed and on this specimen an attempted piercing can be seen too. Mr. Jekov has decided to add them to Nikopolis.

This is the first coin, where the unknown legend in ex. is decipherably. Until now the ex. was always outside the flan. But already the depicted coins have had remains of the legend in ex. Now the legend is completed.

In exergue a large T upside down, then a smaller PO upside down but only about half visible, the concluding N seems difficult to see?
One could wish for a clearer reading on this specimen too!
-
I think the T is part of the legend PROC ICT, not part of the ex. The central letter in the vex. is round, so it seems to be the O of RON. On the right side of O I see straight lines. That could be remains of N. So only the R of RON is missing. It should be on the left side of O.
Jochen
-
Yes the T is the continuation of IC in the circular legend, but to me looks to be below the ground line, so in the exergue.
That would suggest that the PON was also upside down, though not enough of these letters survives to be sure.

Small c above G of GETAC not mentioned. But you can it see on 8.20.1.1, 8.20.20.1 and 8.20.32.1 too. At AMNG 1623 (= 8.20.32.1) Pick writes: "The small naturally belongs to KAIC." Therefore all named coins should be corrected.
Pick writes "in ex. PROC I". But here and on the depicted coin in HrHJ (2018) the ex. seems to be outside the flan.
HrHJ (2018) does know of only 1 ex. of this type. So it was called R10. Now this 2nd ex. turned up and the rarity has to be reduced to R9.

This type was described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." This new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake. So I think it is a basket or a similar container in which the snake is coiling up.

If you take a closer look you can recognize the typical underjaw of a lion if his mouth is open. Because the mane is missing I think it is a lioness.

I suspect this might just be a coin of Geta, same dies as HHJ 2012, p. 248, third coin, but with the obv. legend extensively recut to name Caracalla instead. Note the die break in Geta's drapery below his chin, which also seems to be present on the possibly recut "Caracalla".
But this idea could easily be refuted if you can point to another untooled coin from the same obv. die and so of course with the same obv. legend of Caracalla!
-
Dear Curtis!
Thank you for your hint. Yes, I couldn't find this obv. under the coins of Caracalla which are depicted in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) especially with the close ANT of ANTWNINOC. But there is no bust of Geta in HrHJ (2018) that matches this coin.
When you write "recut" then you think it would be a modern fake?
Jochen
-
Jochen,
Yes, I am postulating recutting by a modern hand. If true the motivation is hard to understand, since altering the obv. legend from Geta to Caracalla would not significantly increase the coin's desirability or market value!
You refer to the coin of Geta HHJ 2018 8.22.9.3 corr., from the same rev. die (only I in exergue) as your possible new Caracalla. I would assume that this is the same specimen I am referring to, HHJ 2012, p. 248, third coin. Doesn't the obv. die show a die break in Geta's drapery below his chin? This is the Geta obv. die which I think may have been recut to Caracalla on the new coin.
Yours,
Curtis
