Patina question relating to Seleukos IV coin
« on: January 11, 2026, 02:14:43 pm »
Hello

I wanted some advice on the patina of this coin (Seleukos IV Philopator). I've tended to avoid coins with this patina so I wanted advice on whether it seems natural or artificially added. The texture is very hard and there is no sign of it crumbling off, for instance. If this is a natural patina, has anyone any insights into how it forms?

Looks like Artificial patina. Simply dip the coin in water for a few minutes and it should fall off after a few rubs.

Looks natural to me. If it comes off after a dip in water, then it is not natural.

Thanks all for feedback - I gave this one a dip in water  few times, and the surface remained as it is.
