What happened to this Caligula Sestertius?
« on: February 07, 2023, 01:50:59 pm »
Hi!
I bought this Caligula Three Sisters Sestertius. Can somebody explain what happened to this coin and why some of metal has fallen apart? Was it bronze disease or something else?

Thanks for Help!

Did it happen while you owned it, or did you buy it that way?

I am by no means an expert, but impure mixing of the metal can cause metal to peel away (laminations) and perhaps in extreme (!) cases could cause a chunk of metal to separate.

Thanks for reply! I bought this sestertius in this condition. The description of an auction house said: corroded.
But I'm wondering how that big part of metal fell away - just by corrosion or something else.

Given the extensive pitting I would say it once suffered from serious bronze disease and the "bite" is the result of an extra-large BD pit.
