DIOCLETIAN unlisted Quinarius ?
« on: May 11, 2005, 03:03:26 pm »
Can some Forum specialist help me for following coin ?
size 15 mm  weight : 1,31 g

Obverse: DIOCLETIANVS AVG
Laureated head right

Reverse: SECV - RIT AVGG
Securitas standing left, legs crossed, leaning on column, holding sceptre

The style let me think the coin is from Treveri.

All informations welcome.

DIOCLETIANVS AVG -O*- SECV / RIT AVGG
This is the second known exemplary of the Lugdunum quinarius Bastien 588 (coll. G. Gautier, 1,42g, 6h, same pair of dies).
It belongs to the 12 emission, which P. Bastien (Le monnayage de l'atelier de Lyon. Dioclétien et ses corégents avant la réforme monétaire (285-294), 222sqq) dates of 294 AD.
Your quinarius and B. 588 share their reverse die with the equivalent quinarius for Maximian (MAXIMIANVS AVG, same bust, B. 589, 1 ex., British Museum, 1,91g, 12h), which in turn shares its obverse die with quinarii bearing the reverse VICTORI/A AVGG (2 ex., Paris, BM), Victory to the r. inscribing a shield V X (Votis Decennalibus) which allows to date these series.
