AE from Magnesian ad Maeandrum ,Ionia
« on: November 22, 2025, 05:57:25 am »
Hello! I saw a Magnesian coin with a magistrate not described in the catalogs.

IONIA. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Ae (Circa 350-300 BC). Eulem-, magistrate.

Obv: Laureate head of Apollo left.
Rev: [MAΓ] / EYΛHM[.
Forepart of bull butting right; maeander to left.

SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock -; BMC -; SNG Munchen -; SNG Kayhan -.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 2.07 g.
Diameter: 14 mm.

Magnesian coins sometimes bear the name EYKΛHΣ.

And the name EYΛHM is found only on one coin that has no description. Perhaps the engraver made a mistake when writing the name and missed the letter K, and turned the letter Σ 90 degrees, turning it into the letter M so that it fits on the coin? I'm interested in your opinion. There are no similar coins in the reference books.

Reading the magisrate as: ΕΥΔΗΜ gives name Eudemos,
that is known eg in Miletos.

Thank you, so the auctioneer mischaracterized the magistrate's name. Right ΕΥΔΗΜ[ΟΣ]

I still can't find similar coins in the catalogs. Can this coin be identified with certainty as the coin of Magnesius on the Meander?

Sometimes new magistrates are showing up, this is not unusual. And yes, the coin is from Magnesia ad Maeandrum.

Dear Sergey A & Board,

As I suspected, the numismatic scholar with which to discuss the intriguing subject of this thread is Dr. Philip Kinns:

https://search.lgpn.ox.ac.uk/browse.html?query=%CE%95%CE%A5%CE%94%CE%97%CE%9C*&collection=&sort=title&field=text&start=1&facet-place=Magnesia

He knows probably more about the coinage of the Ionian region during Hellenistic times than anyone alive today.  Sadly, I do not have ready access to Hirsh's Auction 183, but I wouldn't be surprised if lot 443 is a match to the present coin.  So far, we know with reasonable confidence that Magnesia ad Maeandrum did indeed issue coinage under a magistrate named ΕΥΔΗΜΟΣ.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Mark Fox
