An Armada of Ships
« on: January 11, 2015, 03:47:57 pm »
this one comes by way of request, and since one of my passions is naval history i thought it was a great suggestion. although i currently have no naval-themed ancients in my own collection i know that many of you do and i'd like to see 'em!
so, proud of your prows? then post your numismatic navy here...   8)

All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

I'm not sure the Greek discussion is the appropriate place for this thread since most of what is being posted is Roman.
Anyway, here is my Allectus.

Quinarius, 293-296, Colchester mint.
Obverse: IMP C ALLECTVS P AVG / Radiate bust of Allectus.
Reverse: VIRTVS AVG / Galley sailing to the right, steersman standing aft.
Mint mark: Q C in exergue.
2.50 gm., 19 mm.
RIC vol. V, part 2, #130; Sear #13875.

As I wrote, impressive. A 585 Buyer Fee represents a High of ( give or take) 3000.

With those deep pockets you  can forget about swabbing LRBs and hire a sailor to swab the deck of your yatch.

Ok, I see now.  There actually was no buyer fee, since the Triton buyer (or consignor who bid on his own coin) sent it to the coin shop.  So I got it for the hammer price :)

Here is another interesting (and rare?) ship, mates!

CARIA, Knidus, Apollo right/ Prow, KNID ODW. Lin. I, 636.
