Autonomous with bust of Zeus from ?
« on: April 20, 2014, 04:36:58 pm »
Obv: bust of Zeus r.
Rev:  Deity holding ? in outstretched arm.

Reminded me of Smyrna but I've not found any match.  Any help much appreciated. Sorry, no details yet.

Just a quick impression, could it be Perseus on the reverse? Can you decipher any of the letters on the reverse? I see a C, any more that you're reasonably sure of?

I now think it may be Saitta, similar to this one:

That's the direction I would search in.

Andreas, I think you are right about Perseus.  Found quite a few for Iconium and Argos with Perseus holding head at shoulder or higher. Not really sure of any letters yet..

But they all looked very different when I looked so I thought I was mistaken. The pose of the reverse figure does fit Perseus well.

You nailed it with that one. Thank you.

Lycaonia, Iconium. Imperial times, ca 2nd century AD.
Obv: Draped bust of bearded Herakles right.
Rev: COL ICONI, nude Perseus standing facing, head right, holding harpa in left hand, and head of Gorgon in right.
