Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Unlisted legend variant on Vespasian denarius
« Reply #125 on: February 05, 2014, 11:06:42 am »
Hello everyone,

today I've received this interesting variant of RIC 772, a common Vespasian denarius.

The obverse legend is missing the final AVG; the engravers was short of space, therefore his mistake, I think.

Kind regards

Alberto

An interesting error!

My possible explanation: not running out of space, but confusion with Titus' contemporaneous legend,

T CAESAR VESPASIANVS.

The engraver started the legend correctly for Vespasian,

IMP CAESAR,

but then got it into his head that it was a die of Titus, so finished with VESPASIANVS only, rather than VESPASIANVS AVG !

Thanks Curtis for your comment: it's very astute as usual!

I've edited the technical data of the regular coin as they were wrongly duplicated as you noted.

Interesting error! One that many would miss upon first glance.

Congrats on a nice find!

To be fair, in this case I must give credit to the seller, that pointed it out!

That's the sort of error that a competent seller, who has to catalogue the coin and should check its types and legends against the catalogue, really ought to notice and point out in his description.

A buyer, however, will often overlook such an error if the seller doesn't point it out, for even a specialized buyer can't keep all the attested variants in his head, and won't have the time and stamina to look up every coin in the standard catalogues, or even to carefully examine the types and legends of all the coins which at first glance look common, checking for unsuspected legend errors or obscure typological variants!

I was overhasty: Titus' obverse legend on his parallel TR P IIII Pax seated coins was not

T CAESAR VESPASIANVS, but rather

T CAESAR IMP VESPASIAN.

That makes it difficult to explain the omitted AVG on Alberto's coin as a confusion with the contemporaneous legend of Titus!

Curtis, Perhaps the engraver had recently worked on the parallel Titus die which indeed does not end in AVG and made the same mistake here. I'm not totally discounting your first theory yet!

Hello everyone.

I've been hunting this variety since Lucas H showed his own and finally I got it!

Here are both types of RIC 359 (Titus) with the "EX" in different position.

Kind regards

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian PONT Denarius - 2 ANTIOCHIA Semisses
« Reply #133 on: February 10, 2014, 03:07:58 pm »
Hello everyone.

I've just added three new coins to my gallery.

Two semisses struck in Rome for circulation in Syria during the reign of Vespasian. Turreted Tyche (Antiochia) on reverse.

Another pretty nice PONT denarius, from the earliest issues of Domitian as August.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone,

today I've added to my gallery a newly discovered type (Salus on reverse) and a rare one (Concordia) which seems to share the obverse die.

Kind regards

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian denarii (2) and quinarius
« Reply #137 on: February 21, 2014, 08:42:28 am »
Hello everyone.

Today I've added two common Domitian denarii: I'm filling some hole, yet RIC 771 is very nice.

Then a very scarce early quinarius. Lower denominations are quite scarce and hard to find in good condition, so I'm very happy with this one.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Titus silver drachm & Domitian AE17
« Reply #139 on: February 28, 2014, 01:09:26 pm »
Hello everyone,

today I've received two nice provincials.

First is a silver drachm struck in Cappadocia for Titus as Caesar, in typical local style.

Second is a small AE for Domitian, struck in Caria with an unusual reverse; the liknophoros is the bearer of the sacred basket in Dyonisia (from the greek  λίκνον - basket and φορέω - to bear).

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

Here are three new coins, one for each Flavian emperor.

Starting with a nice left portrait as of Vespasian, with Aequitas on reverse (missing picture in RIC.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-107214

Then a Lugdunum dupondius of Titus, with Securitas on reverse.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-107216

Finally a sought-after Domitian "o mint" denarius, with clasped hand on reverse (slightly out of center), well preserved and nicely toned (same obverse die as my Pegasus RIC 1494).

Hello everyone,

three more additions today.

A well toned Domitian quinarius, my first one with full title legends.

My first sow and piglet denarius (Titus)

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-107612

Last but not least a IVDAEA CAPTA sestertius of Vespasian; it's not a recent purchase, yet I decided to take new pictures and add it to the gallery to make a pair with the Titus example.

Not only unlisted, but also with a stylish portrait!

Thanks David.

Indeed, the coin is much nicer than seller's picture would indicate.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian as Caesar, As and Dupondius
« Reply #148 on: March 19, 2014, 12:30:12 pm »
Hello everyone.

Today I've added to scarce Domitian middle bronzes minted under Vespasian.

The As has a juvenile portrait and the popular VICTORIA reverse.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-107907

The Dupondius has the CERES reverse: you can easily find it struck under Titus (either in Rome or Thrace), but rarely seen with the draped bust typical of Domitian dupondii struck under Vespasian.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian "neronian" sestertius
« Reply #149 on: March 21, 2014, 12:03:31 pm »
Hello everyone.

This sestertius with Annona facing Ceres on reverse, was shortly struck by Domitian (between 85 and 86 A D) copying a well known Nero reverse.

It's a nice type i.m.h.o.

Kind regards

Alberto
