Flavian gallery
« on: March 04, 2013, 11:47:48 am »
Hello everyone.

I wasn't satisfied with my old gallery, so I've decided a new start, newly organized and with better pictures.

The first coin of this new era is a rare dupondius of Domitian as Caesar under Titus, just arrived today.

I love the reverse: look at Vesta holding the Palladium!

Kind regards

Alberto

Very good idea, Alberto, as (quite funny) I'm also in the process of doing so for my Flavians (but I'm a little bit more lazzy than you).
Best

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Mars Victor
« Reply #3 on: March 18, 2013, 12:47:41 pm »
Hello everyone.

The MARS VICTOR type was started on sestertii by Vitellius first.

Vespasian resumed it on his early sestertii.

Domitian repeated it on medium bronzes (asses and dupondii) issued in 85-87 A.D..

I would like to share a couple of examples from recent additions to my flavian collection.

Kind regards.

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Added three rare Domitian denarii
« Reply #6 on: March 28, 2013, 08:39:50 am »
Hello everyone,

thanks to Pierre and Joe for their nice comments.

Today I've added three rare Domitian denarii: RIC 786 var. (Maia), RIC 338 & 339 (Minerva standing with spear).

Only 786 & 338 are really new, since I've already had 339 in my collection. I uploaded it since it is from the same issue of 338, with the only difference of the aegis on 339.

Both are rated R2 in the new R.I.C., but I believe that 338 (without aegis) is rarer.

Kind regards

Alberto

Alberto,
if you move on this way, you must be prepared to write a new book (RIC III ???) dedicated to Domitian, Sir .....
Sincere congrats, Pierre

Thanks David.

Recently I've been busy submitting many coins from my collection to either Coinproject and AsiaMinorCoins, therefore I must admit that I've neglected my gallery.

I will soon come back to it.

Hello everyone.

This is my first denarius in over a month, since I've been dealing with AE and provincials mostly.

RIC 342 it's a rare issue of 85 A.D., a magical year for Domitian coinage, with CENS POT on reverse legend as in AE coinage second issue of the same year.

This coin is missing in R.S.C. as well as in major collections.

Kind regards

Alberto

My goodness, what else are you hiding in your back pocket?!  ;) I've always looked at these tets and have so far been able to resist, but you are not helping! Seriously, another round of fantastic additions. +++ +++ +++

Hello everyone.

Today I've added three flavian AE from Thessalonica in Macedonia.

My last acquisition is Vespasian's RPC 319. The Editors of RPC II knew (eight, edit) thirteen specimen of this coin, yet no one with a fully readable obverse legend. Therefore, mine could be the first known.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

Today I received in the mail three denarii I won in some recent Spanish auction.

The first one is a Vespasian dynastic issue from Ephesus (RIC 1430), a type that was missing in my collection so far.

Two are rare Domitian issues of year 88, a significant year for his silver coinage (RIC 568 and 656).

I especially like the type with the across field reverse legend, therefore I decided to upload three other rare denarii that already were in my collection.

Kind regards

Alberto
