Help identifying a late Byzantine AE coin #2
« on: July 30, 2023, 02:10:38 am »
This coin is much smaller than the other one and might fall into one of the other AE denominations that I don't understand well (assarion, follaro, tornese).  Looks like a standing emperor obverse with a few letters in 2 lines in the left field and likely also in the right field.  the reverse is a jeweled cross with at least 1 letter in each quadrant.

Another option is an imitation of the Alexius I Comnenus , many imitations were made  of much lesser weight.

This old page of mine gives you some examples of imitations.

Another possibility is Trebizond .

Thank you for those suggestions.  I think both suggestions are possibilities.  Here are lighter photos.

The reverse of the Trebizond coin you posted, Vlad, is very close to this one.  Not sure about the obverse.  Where is a good reference guide for similar Trebizond coins?

Might be easier to see if smaller.

The reverse letters look like:

 :Greek_Phi: - ?
 :Greek_Gamma: - N
