Seleukos I otDay
« on: March 25, 2008, 05:25:42 pm »
It is likely to be the best Seleukos I Tetradrachm I am ever likely to own.

Obv:- Head of Herakles right, clad in lion head headdress
Rev:- BASILEWS SELEUKOU, Zeus enthroned left, holding Nike and scepter, monogram left;
Antioch mint, c. 300 B.C.;
Tef:- SNG Spaer 2, WSM 923, CSE 8
Ex-Forvm

It is my first attempt at taking a photograph of it so please bear with me. This big, bright silver coin is causing me more trouble than I expected.

I hope you like it half as much as I do.

Regards,
Martin

Hi,

Congrats on a very nice coin!  I also feel your pain regarding the photography of these, you've done justice to your coin with your picture though.

Brgds,
Darcy

Just wonderful.
A bit of "unsharp mask" or other sharpening tool helps. I took the liberty below.

Lovely coin and a really decent job at photographing it.

Best, Noah

A fabulous coin Martin!

It appears that Nike is holding something with arms outstretched...what could it be?

Nike is reaching as if to crown Zeus with a laurel wreath.

The wreath is Zeus-sized and Nike is very small, so she has to use both hands!

Nike is up to her usual tricks then! lol

I thought it was a laurel wreath but wasn't quite sure. Thanks for the confirmation.

Lovely coin!  I've toyed with the idea of buying one of these but I must stay focussed or become very poor.
