Title: Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, Nikopolis Addenda #7
Post by: Jochen on March 09, 2019, 10:38:23 am
Dear friends of Nikopolis ad Istrum!

Today I got the 1st copy of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, Nicopolis ad Istrum, 2019. It contains altogether 2579 types on 572 pp., all described and depicted b/w. It is the most comprehensive book about the coinage of Nikopolis ad Istrum worldwide. The book can be ordered from me by PM. It is printed on demand. The price is €115.- + shipping. But this is not the end of the story. The chase for new types goes on! Because the edition 2019 is from February 2019 only the coins until #041 are added to this edition. Therefore I post the coins from #042 upwards to Nikopolis Addenda 27 again. So they can be added to a further edition.

So please see this thread as integral supplement of Nikopolis 2019! In any case the year of the edition should Always be added to the refeernce number, because sometimes the listed numbers have changed!

Thanks
Jochen

A new rev. description for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.35g
obv. AV K L C - CEVHROC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT PROC ICT.
Altar with basket (cista mystica?) from which a snake is coiling up
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) 8.14.47.31 corr.
emiliyan_pavlov, Ebay, September 2018

This type was described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." This new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake. So I think it is a basket or a similar container in which the snake is coiling up.

Again an example for a parallel issue for members of the imperial Family

But I have to add that Curtis Clay considers that it is just a tooled coin of Geta. Therefore it should be added at least to "Doubtful coins".

A completely new type for Caracalla

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 16, 2.23g, 15.62mm, 0°
obv. [AV K M A] - ANTWN[I?]
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. NIKOPOLI[T] - PROC ICT.
Altar with basket (cista mystica?) from which a snake is coiling up
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):
rev. cf. No. 8.14.47.31 corr. (for Severus, same die)
          obv. e.g. No. 8.18.46.14
coll. Hoeft

This type was described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." This new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake. So I think it is a basket or a similar container set on the altar in which the snake is coiling up.

This type was until now only known for Severus. Another example for a parallel issue for members of the imperial family!

A correction for Commodus

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 18, 2.44g, 18.05mm, 210°
obv. AV KAI M A - YMODOC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NEIKO - PROC CICT
Tyche, wearing kalathos, enthroned l., holding cornucopiae in l. arm and in extended r.
       hand rudder
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) No. 8.10.38.21 corr. (same die, different obv. legend)
coll. Hoeft

What immediately catches the eye is the clear Y at the beginning of the second part of the legend. This only occurs with the legends for Commodus at A - YR and the A at the end of the first legend part fits well. In the name KOMODOC the KO is missing and the M is only a stunted letter.

Actually, the obv. legend should be completed as AV KAI M A-YR KOMODOC. But the die cutter probably saw that there was not enough space available for KOMODOC. Then he broke off his legend and turned the planned (or already started!) R of A-YR into a mutilated M, so that he could still write MODOC.

Thus it is a legend error and the obv. legend is AV KAI M A - YMODOC.

A correction and new description for Diadumenian

Diadumenian, AD 217-218
AE 27, 12.44g, 27.31mm, 0°
struck under governor Marcus Agrippa
obv. M OPELL[I DI] - ADOVMENIANOC K
Bust, draped and cuirassed, bare-headed, r.
rev. VP A[GRIPPA NIKO]POLITWN / PROC ICT
River god, nude to hips, chlamys hanging down from l. shoulder, std. l. on rock(?), resting
with r. arm on prora behind, holding long branch in l. arm and resting with l. hand on
        urn(?)
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1807, pl. XVIII, 4 (1 ex., trade)
      b) Varbanov 3645 (same dies)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) No. 8.25.32.3 corr. (writes PROC ICTR / W)
      d) Megaw NIC4.38e
coll. Hoeft

The depiction is not clear. Instead of a rock and an urn it could well be a kind of kline (you can see the feet) and a misunderstood back rest. There is no water flowing from it and the left arm floats over it without contact (Pick).

A comprehensive correction for Commodus

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 29, 14.65g, 28.5mm
struck under governor Caecilius Servilianus
obv. AV - T KAI MAR AVRH - KOMODOC
        Laureate head r.
rev. NEIKOPO PROC ICT HGEMO KAIKI CERBEILEI
River god, nude to hips, leaning l., holding in extended r. hand long water plant and

ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1235 var. (different rev. legend)

      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) No. 8.10.32.5 corr. (same dies, writes NEIKOP, but coin
          worn)
cdma59, Ebay, November 2019

This coin is identical too with
(1) No. 8.10.32.14 (same dies, but writes ICTR)
(2) No. 8.10.32.18 (same dies). Here the rev. legend is correct

The decisive detail is the end of the water plant and how it touches the N of NIKOPO. The last two numbers should therefore be removed from the list.

Dear Friends of Nikopolis ad Istrum!

At the end of the year I would like to take stock. Nikopolis Addenda #7 has achieved the following result:

(1) published coins 133
(2) new types (new picture) 27
      (including completely new ones 11)
(3) Legend variants 25
(4) new die combinations 43
(5) Corrections 50
---------------------------------------------------
total 145

These results will be published in the next edition of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum. But I am convinced that more unknown types will appear in the next year.

Best regards

A new 'barbaric' imitation for Caracalla

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 16, 2.10g, 16.08mm, 315°
obv. AV K CE - [.....]
       Laureate head r.
rev. [.....] - PROC ICT
Kybele, in long garment, wearing mural crown (?), std. l. on lion, resting with l. arm on

ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018)
      Unpublished
coll.Hoeft

A very unusual coin. The depiction of Kybele (mural crown, extended r. hand), of the lion (shape, head) and the size ratio of Kybele to the lion speak strongly for an unofficial imitation.

Mr. Gospodin Jekov is preparing the new edition of "The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum 2020" where all 178 here posted coins will be included. The book is now in print. The price will be €115.- + shipping.

Therefore this thread is now closed and I will open a new thread "Nicopolis Addenda #8", that will be an integral part of "The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum 2020".

Best regards
