Gaulish or British tin potin?
« on: April 01, 2005, 01:45:37 pm »
This coin of tin (stannum) I assume, has been in my Celtic collection for a number of years. One side shows Mercury with petasos and the other side a Gallic male head with his hair in a bun on his head. Is it from Gaul or from Britain?
Help by identification badly needed.

There's nothing like it in Spink's 'Coins of England'.

Well, the statement 'Gallic male head'would suggest as much, but the tin coins do occur in England, don't they?
I hop someone else has a clue.
Thanks for the effort, though!

They certainly do, but there's nothing I can find with a design like this. Britain was settled by immigrants from Gaul, and the two had very similar cultures, presumably with close links, as coins minted in Gaul turn up here. For that matter the tin used in Gaulish potin could well have come from Cornwall.
