Title: Online Eckhel
Post by: esnible on January 15, 2007, 01:03:48 pm
Google has put all eight volumes of Eckhel's 18th century Latin work, Doctrina Numorum Veterum, online.

Greek
vol. 1. http://books.google.com/books?id=GchmRRZfiS4C&printsec=titlepage
vol. 2. http://books.google.com/books?id=J0n11GxYAN0C&printsec=titlepage
vol. 3. http://books.google.com/books?id=Y3lSjJ3Ga-IC&printsec=titlepage
vol. 4. http://books.google.com/books?id=KyuSfW2B2OYC&printsec=titlepage

Roman
vol. 5. http://books.google.com/books?id=RTPn9BboZtUC&printsec=titlepage
vol. 6. http://books.google.com/books?id=3rOyZTcZXGIC&printsec=titlepage
vol. 7. http://books.google.com/books?id=RVYa2z_KpqgC&printsec=titlepage
vol. 8. http://books.google.com/books?id=kUymPHHOaPkC&printsec=titlepage

A web page with links to each city/emperor to the page discussing would be of value.  (I'm attempting to do a link page like that for Google's copy of Mionnet's Greek catalog.)

Great, that eliminates one of the two major hurdles blocking the average collector from accessing this wonderful work, namely, getting your hands on the text!  Only major libraries will have it, and it would take patient searching and a substantial sum of money to acquire a copy for yourself.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to surmount the second hurdle, learning enough Latin to be able to read the text!  However, I think those who know some Latin and are familiar with numismatics will find Eckhel a lot easier to read than most ancient Latin texts.

Indeed, the catalogue itself is very easy to read.  And he's easier than the average OCT Introduction.  Pat

That's a pretty good list of Mionnet!  I wasn't able to find supplement volumes 5, 7, or 8 myself!

Amazon has a copy of Mionnet v. 2 online at http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0543951731/

It Amazon's scan of Elibron's commercial copy, so it isn't downloadable, but it is searchable and I've found some good stuff in it.

Hi,

Can't provide a link (as I haven't preserved it) but all Mionnet, except for one of the original volumes (I think it is volume 2 of the original series, 1808) is available if you search hard enough. All of the Supplement is there. Check the "other editions" tab etc. on each volume you find because they aren't necessarily all interlinked.

Mauseus

Supplement v. 2 is at http://books.google.com/books?id=cuzh_HoxYHwC&pg=PP7 .   I forgot to include it in my reply above.

Mauseus, if you can find suppliment v. 6 again we'll have them all.

Hi,

Advanced search, keyword Mionnet, publication date 1833 will pick it up, just tried it.

Title: Online Eckhel / Mionnet Navigation (All Volumes Complete!)

OK, once more with feeling, and clearly much help from our friends:

First-time visitors note: a fully hyperlinked index to all of these volumes would be a great tool but a terrible chore to produce; since both Eckhel and Mionnet are elaborately multiple-indexed to start with in a way that the Google Books text-search can often enrich, as an interim help I have posted these links to the old volume-summaries and topical indices *, so that you'll know which volume(s) to browse through to find what you need.  You will have better luck with the latest Explorer or Firefox 3 than with earlier versions of either of these browsers (for details, see Reply #15); major works have occasionally just vanished from Google Books, so it makes sense to download all these texts as soon as you can.

   * Of course there's also nothing to stop you from loading a general index or summary in one browser window and one or more referenced volumes in other windows; you'll have more success tracking down index-references by hand than by trusting to Google's inset-hyperlinks, which are often keyed to the wrong volumes.  Please remember that we cannot control the way Google Books formats the volumes they scan; let us thankfully make what we can of what goods we receive. By the way, you can generally jump to particular pages once you access particular volumes in Google, but can do so more easily in some of those volumes than others; in some volumes (the ones that do not display numbers in Google Books' page-number windows), to reach a particular page you will need to insert the page number by hand in the web-address heading the page (sometimes adding or dropping a couple of pages for good measure), copy that new address, and load it in a new browser-window.

Just a thought... but maybe the best place for these links and any contents etc. is Numiswiki?

This is just a comment on the missing pages in Echkel:

Aegyptus (vol. 4, p. 1) (Missing pages 5,6, and 9)
Numi Alexandrini (vol. 4, p. 26) (Missing pages 56, 66-71 and 76-8)

I downloaded the fourth Echkel volume on google a couple of times and noticed different missing pages each time. To get the missing pages, on the link page, view and scroll through the desired pages completely-- use the go to page to skip pages you do not want, then press file save (I think it was save page command) and save the file to your desktop. two files/folders will be saved-- one has all the viewed page files in random order in png format. You can load and print them in any photo editing program.

You can do the the same method to download all the RPC pictures (for personal research only, etc.).  The pictures are in the lowest resolution.

The png files may have been created by Firefox or perhaps they are files combined to form the PDF . Some files are jpg and the RPC files are all in jpg format  In either case, a htm file is also created along with the file folder.

Title: Re: Online Eckhel Gaps -- How to Avoid Them

-- A quick followup on the gaps one may meet with when downloading Eckhel -- the same gaps don't show up in Eckhel vol. 4 as downloaded via Internet Explorer *; this may be one rare instance where Firefox (at least the old version) is not quite a match for IE.

   * Here's a link to a page that loads properly in Interet Explorer or the new, improved Firefox 3 but does not load at all in the older version:

Now that it has turned up in a Google Books search I have added a functioning link to the missing Mionnet Vol. 2, published 1807; I have listed the working URL in the general roster above (= Reply #9).  All these items are worth downloading sooner not later to avoid disappointments if Google withdraws the links.

I would be pleased if you added them.

I've noticed that at any given time, if you click the "Who's Online" link, there are usually a dozen or so guests printing this topic. (why?) Is this book that popular? If so, we need an online version for sure!

i've noticed that too, although i'm sure it's a spider-bot and not really individual guests.
still, i wonder what the attraction is?

I want to consult Mionnet's vol. 2, in the original work not the supplement, but the link above just brings me to a description of the book, with no way I can see to go through it page by page.

Am I overlooking something? Does anyone know of another working link to Mionnet vol. 2?

Once upon a time, all of the links above worked and I downloaded all of the books.  I have uploaded them to a Dropbox folder and you are all free to download them.  Just save them to your harddrive and read at your leisure.

Is Eckhel the author of that 1785 auction catalogue?

Ah yes, p. 2 is a preface by Eckhel, where he explains that the collection offered for sale was assembled by Garellianus, and includes Roman Republican and Imperial coins in silver and bronze only, the collection's gold coins having already been disposed of. Eckhel informs the reader that he arranged the collection himself before the owner's death, so can guarantee that the coins are all authentic and in good condition, and include some very rare types but no duplicates, nor the useless accumulation of late Roman bronze coins that disfigures some collections. The whole collection to be sold as one lot, starting price 3000 Austrian florins. Customers having particular questions are invited to contact Eckhel himself by letter.

On the following pages the contents of the collection are summarized by Republican family or emperor and by metal and size only, not by type. Total coins in the collection, according to p. 14:

1099 Republican
2210 imperial silver coins
1026 Imperial large bronzes
1144 imperial middle bronzes
566 imperial small bronzes
Total: 6045 coins.
