Ayubid or Mamluk?
« on: December 01, 2005, 04:20:38 pm »
Dear all,

This copper fals is 22x18mm size.
I guess that it is Ayubid or early Mamluk fals from Syria or Egypt. Please, help me to identify the exactly year, ruler and mint.

Thanks in advance,

Are you sure it's AE and not AR debased silver?because if it's really AE,it's a rare coin,and here the attribution:
ISLAMIC-MAMLUK
Sultan:AL MANSUR SAYF AL-DIN QALA’UN:678-689  H /1279-1290  AD.
Mint and date missing:Probably Damascus Ref:Balog 141 var

Thanks Nassif,

It's copper for 100% percent, not bilon.
Can you suggest, please, some good reference book for mamluk coins.

Hi;
For the moment there is the basic reference,Balog.P:"The coinage of the Mamluk Sultans of Egypt and Syria"-Numismatic studies;New York 1964.
Needs updating for a lot of coins but still very solid.There is Step.Album:but it's for grading the rarity and overvew..
regards.
