The style of the obverse does not seem to be official. Too clumsy.

Looks OK (official) to me.

In my BMC I have written in two other specimens of this denarius with the same laureate and cuirassed bust type. Strack would probably have found others, if only his Marcus-Commodus volume, which he had written and sent to the printers, had not been destroyed in World War II !

Hi, Lech,

I agree with Curtis, it is official,

I have another specimen with the same bust but the different reverse type and obverse legends...

Hi Joe,

Very interesting bust variant indeed. I used to own the coin (Mars on reverse) with the obverse die link to your coin with Annona (I can't attach it at the moment).

Probably there was only one die produced of this very cuirassed bust that was then combined with Annona and Mars reverses.  That is why those bust variants for Mars and Annona are rare enough.

I also used to have Annona combined with draped bust from that issue. Theoretically there must be in existence the entire series of draped, draped&cuirassed and cuirassed busts for Annona reverse.

Cheers,

Z.

More precise description of this bust type would be 'seen from rear ' :
Laureate draped and cuirassed bust right seen from rear  (Bust code B2*)
such as RIC V/I Temp #146
However, I could not see drapery, hence, this bust type should be described as:
Bust right, laureate, cuirassed and draped with paludamentum, seen from rear  (Bust code D2*)
such as RIC V/I Temp №: 4211

Teutoburgium Hi,

Could you please clarify what does it mean RIC V/I N 146 and N4211???  .... Do you mean RIC V/Vol 1, Valerianus and his family?.... From curiosity I checked the number 146 but it was not of help really, and I did not find 4211 at all. Though, generally I agree with you suggestion for  description of the bust. Im just a bit puzzled with provided references...thank you

If Curtis says so, I dare not to deny it. However, your second specimen looks much much better for me and the first - by contrast - still not so good.
