Severus Alexander AE30
« on: July 05, 2020, 03:44:40 pm »
The tag says Stratonikeia, Caria and that may be correct. The legend starts CTP but it could be an abbreviation for strategos, not the beginning of Stratonikeia.

AY K M AYP CEY - AΛEΞANΔPO-C
Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind

CTP....ΤΩΝ
Demeter standing half left, grain in right hand, long torch in left (not sure this is Demeter, or grain or torch)

Anyone know it? Thanks!

Could be from Apollonia Salbace (Caria).

The title of this thread is "Severus Alexander AE30", so I think it is about a bronze coin with a size of 30 mm  :).

Why do you think so? I don't find anything from this city similar to the coin here.

I found coins from Aizanoi which have at least some similarity:
https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/6/4291
https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/6/4292

But they are larger and not a real match, the legends are perhaps different and the shirt of Zeus is too short  :).

1. The last part of the reverse legend, starting from the hand of the figure may be read (in greek letters) as APOLLONAITON.
2. The title of the magistrate in charge in that city of Caria is a Strategos (begining of the reverse legend but his full name is difficult to read).
3. There is a quite similar reverse discribed as Ceres for a coin for Caracalla from that mint.

In my eyes the last letter before the TΩN is an X or perhaps a K  :-\.

Dear Joe, Mac, Altamura, Amictus, & Board,

I probably spent too much time digging around, but consider this obverse die match:

https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/6/5384

But clearly Tabae is not the issuing city for Joe's coin, based on the bits of the reverse legend that are still visible.  This is where neighboring Apollonia Salbace, as Amictus suggested, makes more sense.   Even if we leave out the very uncertain parts, we still likely have:  "CΤΡΑ Α[-]Α[-]Є[----] [-]Ο – V [--] ΑΠ[-]ΛΛΩ[---]ΤΩΝ" which is very suggestive of "ϹΤΡΑ ΑΓΑΘƐΙΝΟΥ TOY IH ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΙΑΤΩΝ."

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Thanks Mark and Mac, Altamura, and Amictus. I think that is it. Interesting that the obverse die is shared with a neighbor. I think the reverse die was cut by the same engraver as the Tabae reverse.

This interesting feature was first "discovered" by Konrad Kraft in 1972
Quote
Materialien und Entwürfe zum System der kaiserzeitlichen Münzprägung in Kleinasien

Since then we know that travelling mints worked for groups of smaller cities in the Asia Minor.
The style gives it away - and sometimes even the use of the same obverse dies for different cities.
To my knowledge an update to Kraft´s monumental work of its time is still a desideratum.
