Allison Sermarini's Maps of the Ancient World
« on: June 18, 2013, 06:54:38 pm »
My daughter, Allison, just graduated High School and will be starting at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) in August. She plans to study Classics with a focus on Linguistics, learning Greek and Latin. Needless to say, I am quite pleased.

I have given my daughter a summer assignment, Allison Sermarini's Maps of the Ancient World. It is a gallery of ancient maps using the same software as the Members' Gallery and Fake Coin Reports.  You can see the gallery here:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/Ancient-Maps/index.php

You too can contribute to Allison Sermarini's Maps of the Ancient World.  If you own a map or maps of the ancient world that is out of copyright, please upload it.  If you have created a map of the ancient world, please upload it to share it with the modern world.

Hi,

Can I add a suggetion that the map source is added to the title or description, eg "journal Antiquity 1796" as this would add context to understanding the map and the features marked/interpreted?

Congratulations to Allison and I wish her well with her future studies.

Regards,

Mauseus

The source is included in the description on many of the maps uploaded so far.  For some, the source information is unknown.  We added a specific source field to the upload process to help remind others to include it.

Hi,

No button that I cn see to add a map so I'm posting it here and you can move it. It is from the journal Archaeologia, vol 33, 1849. It is from a paper by John Yonge Akerman " On the Condition of Britannia from the descent of Caesar to the coming of Claudius, accompanied by a map of a portion of Britain in its ancient state, shewing the finding of indigenous coins".

Thank for the map.  The button should show now.  It was an incorrect setting, that I have corrected.

Joe, you might see if you can find a copy of Ptolemy's maps of the ancient world.  That is, an ancient map of the ancient world.  On the other hand, that might be a little off your daughter's focus, it is more about how they (the ancients) pictured their world.

Thanks Sosius.  It is just getting started, I hope it is gets much better than it is now.

JBF, Thanks for the suggestion.  Anyone can upload maps, so if you find a print of Ptolemy's maps that is out of copyright (1926 or older), you can add it too.

I just discovered (by chance) this resource with all those maps. It's a great and amazing job Allison has done.
Please thank her and congratulations for her graduation

Best regards

Here's a cool map Allison might want to put in the gallery.  It's an animated gif showing the expansion and contraction of the Roman Empire from the founding of Rome through the fall of Constantinople.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-93750

It's from Wikimedia Commoms and free to share (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roman_Empire_map.gif)

Another suggestion would be Ras Suarez's late Roman Mint map, which I understand he has released into the public domain:

Thanks for the suggestions. The maps are a wiki. You can actually add them yourself.

Thanks, Joe.  I tried to upload, but got the following error:

This is the one I wanted to upload..
