Very interesting!  I always thought that references to these ships as "beaked" (as in "He found Achilles by his beaked ship") meant the pointed ramming devices at the bow.

Thank you for the comments, gentlemen.  The "beaked" reference certainly could also be interpreted as the battering ram.
