Help to ID an Aureus Severus
« on: July 29, 2021, 11:27:57 am »
Hello, a friend offer to me this coin, but I don't find further more information about it.
I only found one auction with this coins.

https://www.cgbfr.com/septime-severe-aureus-ttb-,v43_0451,a.html

Could you help me to tell if is fake or not?

this is the second time you've posted this coin.

RIC only lists this type as a denarius (which was pointed out last time).  It's RIC IV 231.  The portrait style is also not up to a normal Rome mint aureus standard.

Absent proof to the contrary, from say a grading service, you should consider not buying it. It is suspect and you should either be confident you know the coin or trust the seller implicitly if considering a purchase.

Lastly, not all coins can be definitively authenticated from a few digital photos.

A known modern fake.

I have seen examples in silver too, though by 209 AD genuine aurei were almost always struck from different dies than genuine denarii. No more die sharing between the metals, as was normal in earlier centuries.
