Unknown Athena / Medusa? Obol -- Any Leads?
« on: October 11, 2017, 09:18:29 am »
The seller described this as Lykian unlisted, with rev. "unknown bearded man (Sarpedon?)"; I think the reverse is a slightly weather-beaten Medusa in an elegant late classical style, not the fright-mask we find on the comparable fractions of cities like Selge and Aspendos. Lykian? Why? Thanks for any / all better suggestions!

Weather-beaten...perhaps. Testosterone overshooted ? For shure.
I have never seen a Medusa wearing a beard.
On the other hand Perikles doesn't need assistance to be more virile.

Lycia is a good track to pursue. Have a look on the two coins, I think there are close enough to show what I mean :

DYNASTS of LYCIA. Perikles and Vedrei. Circa 380-370 BC. AR 1/6 Stater (11mm, 0.96 g, 9h). Lion right, attacking bull standing left / Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet. Falghera 214; SNG Copenhagen Supp. 481; SNG von Aulock 4247-8

DYNASTS of LYCIA. Perikles. Circa 380-360 BC. AR Third Stater (2.90 g, 6h). Laureate and draped bust of Perikles facing slightly left, drapery around neck / Triskeles; PERIKLE in Lycian around; all within shallow incuse circle. Unpublished, but cf. Mildenberg, Mithrapata 24-9 for this obverse type on staters

Best regards
Martin

Interesting; not a standard way of picturing Perikles, but the portraits do have much in common. Thanks for posting these pics!
