Pergamon? (Photos in replies)
« on: October 11, 2021, 08:41:33 pm »
Hello all,
I think I'm getting somewhere with this one, but I'd like a second opinion as I'm not as confident with IDing Greek coins compared to Roman coins. I believe it to come from Pergamon (attalos II, 159-138BC). The reverse looks like it has a serpent on it, and the obverse has Athena on it. The main problem I have is it's bigger than the examples I could find. The weight is 4.25g
Any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks
Mark

It perhaps could be this type from Pergamon: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=8553408

But it is hard to decide, your pictures are quite bad, more coin and less hand would be better :-\.

Hi Altamura,
That's the one I think it is, but it's 2mm wider so I'm not sure  ???
I will try and take some better pictures when I get home   :)

Many thanks

Ancient coins are no high precision products, this alone is no reason to worry :).

Yes, it seems to be so :).

You see on the reverse the serpent and left of it a part of the monogram (there are different ones on this coin type). Perhaps like on these:
