RIC and Helmets...
« on: August 11, 2004, 08:31:36 pm »
Ave!

RIC's Tabulated Key to Obverse Busts - D types (helmeted).

What is the difference between a helmet, a plumed helmet and a high-drested helmet?

I should know by now, but am sometimes unsure. Please post some pix. I'm sure I'm not the only one just a bit confused here.

Thanks,

K

Ave retrorsum!

I was browsing RIC VII for the helmets and found the following informations:
D3 helmeted, is the most common of all D types
These types are relative variable in shape
D4 helmet with plume, is very rare. Only at Cyzicus for Urbs
      Roma
D7 high-crested helmet (bowl-shaped) is easily to attribute

Now some types : helmeted
D2 from Ticinum RIC VII, 119 and RIC VII, 138

The next one: helmeted

D6 from Siscia RIC VII, 47 and RIC VII, 59

You see the differences to those from Ticinum, but both only helmeted!

Now the rarest type: helmet with plume (Urbs Roma)
Only found from Cyzikus!

D4 from Cyzikus RIC VII, 72 and RIC VII, 91

You see the long plume behind the neck?

(Correction added by FORVM:  The plume is the triangular shape in front)

And now the last one: high-crested helmet (bowl-shaped)

D7 from Rome RIC VII, 148

Hope I could help you! The pics are from the plates in RIC VII and their quality is not high.

Regards,
Jochen

Here's a nice high-crested bowl-shaped (D7) type

I think the plume is the small triangular protrusion at the front of the helmet just above the visor, clear on 91 but not on 72.
What Jochen points to behind the neck is the lower end of the crest.

Hi Curtis!

Thanks for the correction! I was searching for a better pic of a D4-bust, but these two were the only pics in RIC VII. Perhaps there is a member of the Forum who has a coin with a D4-bust which he want to share! They are on VRBS ROMA coins of Cyzikus.

Jochen

You can see something sticking forward at the front of the helm on the RIC 91 image. I asume that's it.

Would this one be the D4?

Hi jbaran!

I think yours is a D3 bust with a very interesting helmet!
But please look at the pic. That is RIC VI, Siscia 91 with D4 bust copied from the RIC plates!

Jochen
