There are lots of databases online but of course a large complex database (in contrast to an EXCEL file) is not easily downloadable, even if the owner allowed it.
The EXCEL format is perfectly fine for small, clearly delimited areas but I imagine if someone wanted to put a project like http://coinproject.com/ into an EXCEL file it would become gigantic and unusable long before more than a fraction of the data was in. And it still wouldn't have any pictures, which are essential when identifying unknown coins.

The online databases (or galleries) I use regularly are:
All ancient coins:
http://coinproject.com/
http://www.acsearch.info/

RPC online (Provincials of the Antonines):
http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/

Asia minor
ISEGRIM :
http://isegrim.dasr.de/
http://www.asiaminorcoins.com/

Roman Imperial:
http://romanatic.com/

None of them are downloadable of course.

My thought is to convert Helvertica's spreadhseets to a downloadable database....
However, her spreadhseets do not cover the Republic, nor do I believe they encompass all emperors.

You might want to ask her about that first!  I don't think they're in the public domain. She's worked hard at creating them and if she'd put them anywhere other than her own website, she'd probably put them at Wildwinds. But I won't speak for her.

Are there any DB's that cover the Republic?  It might be there, that I start?

Do you want to create one large database (with pictures?) to eventually include all ancient coins?
This is what Coinproject is doing and it is a gigantic amount of work setting up the database, not even counting adding and editing the actual data. The different areas are very very different and so it's not easy to design a database to include all of them.

You may want to check out Andrew McCabe's extensive website for the Roman Republican coinage: http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/#quick I doubt it can be beaten, and there is no need to reinvent the wheel.

CoinProject.com currently has 1441 coins "approved" under Roman Republican & Imperatorial:

http://coinproject.com/issuer_list.php?sort=alpha&type=6

We have quite a backlog of coins to edit and approve, if all goes as planned we will pass the 2,000 mark under the Republican category within a few months.  Right now our focus has been in filling holes in the database.  We will also be adding biographical, chronological and numismatic data as time permits to the page of each moneyer.

Best,

Alfred

Tacitus, what kind of databases are you looking for?  For what purpose?

I had planned to create some databases from my Greek and Roman Provincial scanned text.  Life got in the way and I never got around to it.  I also found few people who shared my vision of creating machine-readable representations of numismatic information.
