Egyptian Potin
« on: December 17, 2010, 12:19:16 am »
Hello,
I am having a very hard time figuring out potins.
The letters wear in a very strange way and they are greek, which makes it harder.
If anyone has any general advice in addition to my specific query below, I would appreciate it.

Here is one of my potins:

Hi Kevin!

You are right. Alexandrian tetradrachms are often hard to recognize. But this is an easier one. The typical long neck and the legend with the the dot followed by KL makes it Diocletian.

struck AD 287/288
obv. A KG OVA DIOKLETIANOC CEB
rev. Athena Nikephoros stg. l. with transversal sceptre and shield
in l. field LD (RY 4)
ref. Dattari 5636; Geissen 3238f; Förschner 1265

Best regards

OH!

I see that is Kappa Lambda, not KA
And the Delta is very narrow looking much like an I.

Thanks!
