First Wife of Elagabalus Added
« on: August 20, 2010, 07:48:22 am »
Lack of employment has forced me to sit on the sidelines, but this has changed.  To celebrate finding a position I purchased a coin of one of the “Twelve Caesars”.  I only own five Roman Coins, with the sixth;  Nerva Denarius, in route.  I don’t have enough specimens to start a photo-gallery, but I needed to share my new treasure.

VESPASIAN . . 69-79 AD. Silver Denarius18mm (3.40 gm). . R: Pax seated left, holding olive branch. cf. RIC 772, (RIC [1962] 90), RSC 366, BMC 161.

Nice one...I would suggest making a gallery now, though. It will be easier adding now than when you really start rolling!  ;D

I agree with Chris...start one now!  And a nice coin too!  Congrats on the coins and finding a job.

first off, let me congratulate you on finding work! i'm sure that must be a great relief.

next, congratulations on finding a really nice denarius! this one has a very expressive portrait compared to many Vespasians i've seen (my own included).

and last let me echo Jay and Chris... start a gallery! six coins is enough, and then we can all gawk and leave comments!  8)

Thanks everyone for your kind words.  It feels good to be employed again.   :D This Vespasian, and a Nerva, are sort of a self-reward for finding a job.

As you can see below, I've taken your advice and started a "Gallery".  This coin is the first photo I posted.  As I said, I don't have many others, but I will include those very soon.

Once again, thanks.  :)

My Nerva - Clasped Hands Denarius arrived in the mail this afternoon (take a peek in my Gallery).  I am a very happy man.  I'll have to take a buying break for just a little bit, but it feels good to be "back in the saddle again".

I had a very 'productive' Whitman Philadelphia Show.  I just added four Denarii to my collection & gallery.  Check out my new Titus, Domitian, Hadrian and Antoninus Pius.  My photographic skills & equipment don't do these coins justice, I know everyone says this, but these really are much better "in hand".

Thanks everyone for encouraging me to start a “Gallery”.  I didn’t think my meager collection was worthy, but I am so glad that I am able to share this small collection (now numbering 10 specimens) with people who share my passion.

One of the most enjoyable things about collecting is sharing the thrill of a new acquisition, but until now I didn’t have anyway of doing that.  My wife still “appears” interested, but my 16-year-old daughter has given up even pretending.  ;)

I just added my newest acquisition to my Gallery.  My Elagabalus Denarius with Salus standing right, holding & feeding serpent (RIC-140) arrived today.

I am quite pleased with the coin and I am very happy that my photographic skills are getting a little bit sharper (bad pun intended).  For once, I don’t feel like I have to apologize, on behalf of my coin, for not presenting the specimen accurately.  I know I could do a little better if I had proper equipment, but I pretend to be a Numismatist not a Photographer.  ;D

I had a great day in Baltimore.  I met some really nice & interesting people, learned a lot and added two coins to my Denarii Collection:

My First Republican

ROMAN REPUBLIC. Q. Thermus M.f. 103 BC.
Silver denarius (3.86 gm).
Head of Mars left
Two warriors fighting, the one on the left protecting fallen comrade, the other wearing horned helmet, Q THERM M F in exergue.
Crawford 319/1. Sydenham 592. Babelon Minucia 19. CRR 592

And a nice Severan

Caracalla
Denarius (2.95 gm).
ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, laureate head right
P M TR P XVIIII COS IIII P P, Jupiter, naked, standing front, head left, with thunderbolt & scepter.
RSC 337, RIC 275a, BMC 155-6

Thanks Mark,

The Republican Minucia was a real stretch for me.  I wanted a nice example of a republican denarius and this one told me a story.  It is interesting how the Roman fighting the Barbarian is defending a fallen comrade.  The obverse depiction of Mars is in a very 'Hellenistic' style.

I'm having a lot of fun and I'm learning a great deal.  Before my next acquisition I'll have to replenish the "collecting fund", but I'll be back in the game in a little bit.

Nice coin! I think actual year of coin is 75 AD - it was Vespasian's 6th consul year (= COS VI).

I added another coin to my Gallery today:

Severus AlexanderRIC 221
Denarius. 230 AD.
IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG, laureate head right, slight drapery on far shoulder
VIRTVS AVG, Virtus seated left on cuirass holding branch and sceptre or inverted spear.
RSC 580, RCV 7937, BMC 653

I am so glad I took the advice of my FORVM mates to start a Gallery.  As I've said before, It is great to share my growing collection with people who can appreciate it.

On Monday I added:

Clodius AlbinusRIC 7
as Caesar, AR Denarius. 194 AD.
D CLOD SEPT ALBIN CAES, bare head right
MINER PACIF COS II, Minerva standing facing with olive branch, shield & spear.
RIC 7, RSC 48, RCV 6144, BMC 98

I already posted a photo of the Clodius Albinus "COTD".  Forgive me if I'm a bit proud of a coin that is less than spectacular, but I never thought I’d be able to acquire a coin of this “usurper”

Apparently it didn't take long to replenish the "collecting fund," did it? ;)

And invested in spectacular fashion, too!

well done!

I just added the following to my growing collection of Denarii:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-63091

I couldn't pass on "The Big Guy".  He may not have been "8 Foot Tall", but who am I to argue with a "Giant".

Maximinus I Thrax – RIC 77a
Denarius, Rome, 235-6 AD, 2.99g.
Obv: without GERM, second portrait.
IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG, laureate draped bust right
PROVIDENTIA AVG, Providence standing left holding cornucopia & wand pointed at globe at foot.
BMC-86, RSC-77a, RIC-13, RCV-8315

I’ve just added, what is in my humble opinion, a pleasant Marcus Aurelius to my small collection of Imperial Denarii.

Marcus Aurelius Denarius. 172 AD
M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVI, laureate head right
IMP VI COS III, Aequitas standing left holding scales & cornucopiae
RSC 257, BMC 562, RCV 4903, RIC 252
