KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III
« on: August 05, 2004, 07:08:25 pm »
I am struggling to attribute a greek coin in my possession. Unfortunately no picture. But it is your typical Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin / Zeus seated left, holding eagle and sceptre.

To the left below the bird is a triangle within a dashed circle   :Greek_Delta: and below the chair is a 'A' with a vertical line below the horizontal bar of the A.

Can anyone also tell me what the vertical writing to the right of Zeus is saying.

Thanks

Hi Bolayi!

Normally right of Zeus (behind him) there is vertically ALEXANDROU (Genetive case of ALEXANDROS).

Regards,
Jochen

Hi Bolayi!

Left of Zeus' knee and under the throne are monograms. Behind Zeus is as stated ALEXANDROU where you can read only LEXAND and a small part of the A at the beginning and the left part of the R (in Greek).

Jochen

Do the monograms mean anything? Do they give mint locations or mint dates?

I think these are the monograms of the moneyers or mintmasters. I don't know wether there is a list of all their names and dates. But there are members on the Forum with more knowledge of Greek coins than me. Start a new topic and ask for the monograms of the moneyers!

Mint of Magnesia ad Maeandrum, Price 1981, 319-305 BC.  Find a copy of Martin Price's "The Coinage in the Name of Alexander the Great and Philip Arrhidaeus" at your local university library. You will find a thorough discussion of all the mint marks and symbols, along with an extensive bibliography for further research.

The book is still in print and available but it is expensive.
