mark antony and augustus silver, hopefully paranoid!!!
« on: October 27, 2008, 10:13:24 am »
i purchased these two with selling on in mind however before i do i want to check that they are ok,(ive had some bad luck lately!)the reason im a bit worried is that the mark antony altho it looks worn has a line on the edge, not all the way around, just a bit ,hopefully it is just a chip like you would expect.
the other coin which i havent identified fully yet apart from being augustus looks well worn on the reverse but the obverse altho still worn seems really raised on the portrait.
do people that make or own cast coins wear them down on purpose to make them look more authentic? regards paul

I can't speak about the Augustus but the Mark Antony looks fine to me.  The style is right and to me it looks legit.  Remember his coins are very low grade silver and most have been around the block for a few centuries.  XIII th is much sought after in any condition.

I agree with Titus Pullo about the Antony being legit.
(Of course, he's going to be partial towards the XIIIth Legion since he is a veteran of it!)
As to the Augustus, I can't say for sure one way or the other based on the photos.

thankyou both very much, im not that great at spotting the fakes so whenever there is a slight question mark i prefer to eat humble pie and check rather than accidently selling one, so im very grateful thankyou.
by the way why is the XIII sought after?

Julius Caesar levied the 13th just before the Rubicon.  It then went over to Antony upon Caesar's death and eventually after Actium it was reconstituted under Augustus as LEG XIII Gemina.  It is also the legion that two of the main characters come from in the HBO series ROME.  "Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus"  BTW they were historical figures in Caesar's book "The Gallic War" although for the series it is completely fictional.
