Carinus OTD
« on: June 11, 2021, 06:06:12 pm »
Not my usual fare, but occasionally I see a late 3rd century antoninianus that I feel like I can't possibly live without.

This is - by miles - the best example I have ever seen. I was thrilled to pieces when it arrived this week.

obv: IMP C M AVR CARINVS PF AVG - cuirassed and radiate bust right
rev: VOTA PVBLICA - Carinus and Numerian facing, in military gear, sacrificing over tripod, standards to the sides.

SMSXXIB in exergue - Siscia, second officina

RIC 315

The iconography is particularly clear here: Carinus (the senior augustus) is slightly taller than the younger Numerian.

Post your nicest Carinus (or Numerian! or Daddy Carus!)

Evan

That is rather a splendid example of the Vota reverse type, well for any Carinus for that matter.

Thanks everybody! And what an eye-popping example, Ed! It looks more like a high quality billon than silvered bronze. Does it look different in hand?

Lest the mint at Ticinum feel left out of our Siscia-fest, I post my only other Carinus antoninianus, purchased from our wonderful host Joe many years ago:

M AVR CARINVS NOB C, radiate draped and cuirassed bust right;
PRINCIPI IVVENTVT, Carinus standing left holding standard and spear
IXXI? in exergue; struck with damaged die (exergue);
Unlisted in RIC, but should fit in around RIC 177

EF, 4.94g, 24.6mm, 180o, Ticinum mint, very rare
