Aureus of Severus Alexander #2
« on: July 28, 2012, 03:23:33 pm »
I was researching another Severus Alexander - MARS VLTOR aureus when I stumbled across this one on acsearch. It sold in 2009.

I believe it to be a match to the following coin from the fake reports which was sold as a Slavei copy.

Am I correct?

Regards,
Martin

Surely a match, and both appear to have been struck.

I just checked up at acsearch.info. It is unbelievable but this coin was sold by a major auction house! :o

From what we can do inference, maybe selling fake coins.
Or that the picture can not be concluded, whether a coin is fake.
For this, we have professionals, who can certify, whether a coin is genuine.

The people who sold this coin are professionals and so are the people who determined that the other is a modern fake.

and this is an interesting reverse. Stylistically different, whether it is genuine?

The acsearch coin is identified as Calico 3073. I will check that tomorrow.

The reverse die does appear to be a match to Calico 3073, however, the Calico plate is actual size and it is not possible to be certain.  The obverse is clearly not a die match.
I was not expecting to find even the possibility of a die match because my impression is they are not ancient.
