Yes, someone finally said it.
Here's how STRIKING a PROFESSIONALLY restored ancient coin looks.

Wow, thanks Andreas.  I could never quite put my finger on where we were all going wrong, and now I understand!  If only we could do as good a job of restoring and conserving as this esteemed alleged member of the PCGS!

It must have been that "finishing coat" that turned that bronze coin silver. I bow to their masterful cleaning techniques!  ::)

No that's the original silver wash, brilliantly restored by the cleaning. These small silver-washed bronze folles were, in official Roman terms, considered to be silver coins. It certainly was washed in silver when made, it looked silver when issued, and a careful and sensitive restoration has unveiled its natural silver.

Whilst that is impressive Andrew, I think the real genius is the way they have managed to restore the gilt on the faces and hands of the reverse.  Surely restoring something that none of us even knew happened to common bronzes is the major surprise with their astounding cleaning abilities.

Personally, I think they should add small diamond chips, or at least cut glass crystal to add to the sparkle that I'm sure was there originally ;) I mean, come on, why do a half... job ::) This was Rome for crying out loud!

I'm new to this whole ancient coin thing, but this coin is hilarious. I didn't know sharpies were an acceptable form of restoration... ::)

I didn't want to say anything at first but what have you done with the coin? Depatinated and then painted with silver paint? It is silver in colour but that is clearly no original silvering. Or did you use the baking method to 'restore silvering'?
