Mithradates from Kommagene or Sophene?
« on: May 27, 2022, 06:48:20 am »
Recently I acquired a coin which nowadays seems usually to be assigned to Mithradates II Philopator of Sophene, dated to "circa 89-after 85 BC".
It looks like these and also has such a countermark:

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7835480
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7805829
The reference given is always Kovacs 35, referring to Frank Kovacs, "Armenian Coinage in the Classical Period", Classical Numismatic Studies 10, Lancaster, PA 2016. Unfortunately I don't have access to this book :(.

In older auctions this type has been assigned to Mithradates I Kallinikos of Kommagene:

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5061790
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2656425
Obviously there has been a reattribution by Frank Kovacs in his book.

But elsewhere I find nearly nothing about this Mithradates II Philopator of Sophene and the reasons why this coin type has been assigned to him :-\.
(And I also don't find a single review of Kovacs's book :-\.)

Does anyone know more about this?

This is the editor's text for the press but not a review :-\, you find it at several places in the web.
