Solidus Zeno + question about officina
« on: November 02, 2021, 06:34:05 pm »
Hi all,
in The Netherlands a metal detectorist found in 1998 a nice solidus of Zeno (474-491). Beside the interesting late strike from Constantinopolis/Istanbul I have a question about the attribution and officina mark.
Is it correct to register this under RIC X-910 or RIC X-910-variant?
The variant might be the officina mark #13 (ΓΙ (gamma iota)) on the reverse. I don't see it on WildWinds:
http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/zeno/t.html. I don't know if these kind of small differences are registered somewhere and by whom?
Does the number of officina also say something about the year of coin strike?

PS: More info on officina: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Officina)

I think I only see gamma (3rd officina).

Thank you Joseph, I think you're right!
There is a line, but I now think that's part of the surface the figure is standing on.

Over time I have learned, if you see something very unusual on an ancient coin, you might be seeing it wrong. I used to find a lot more unpublished and odd coins than I do now.

The Sagan Standard, ECREE - Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence.  Carl Sagan applied this to the search for extraterrestrial life, but it can be applied as a universal rule of logic - sort of the flip side of Occam's Razor.

When I began in this hobby I used to look at my very worn coins and try to see any indication of an unlisted variant.  Hope sprang eternal.  Now when things are difficult to read my default assumption is it will be the most common solution, if this is definitely ruled out then the second most common, etc.

Im finishing my works on Zeno. It should be online in some monthes after i completed my book. So:

Yes it is 3rd officina as Joe said.

It is the RIC 929 because of obverse style (large portraiture = 5th issue) and variant with jewels on diadem. I already classified a similar coin. Antoher that i listed but without jewels (930) is probably from the same obverse engraver, this one: https://www.all-your-coins.com/en/archives-anciennes/romaines-imperiales/victoria-avggg2nd-regne-476491-5eme-emission-810  (offline page)
I have no information about  :Greek_Gamma:I mark but i know  :Greek_Gamma:A. Where did you found this coin? I think the sources (if you saw it on books) misdescribed the  :Greek_Gamma:A mark as on this coin i listed: https://www.all-your-coins.com/en/archives-anciennes/romaines-imperiales/victoria-avggg2nd-regne-476491-5eme-emission-912 (offline page)
Where the letter A can be seen as I.

My comments on the pages i linked are to be read with the whole work i made... It can be confusing if you read it without all explanations.

If you have any question about this period just ask me, ill be happy to reply. I listed 200 + different solidi of Zeno. Im starting soon the silver coinage ranking.

Hello Flav V,
sorry for my late reply, but many thanks!
I already checked your website, great work!
Is it somewhat related to this initiative: http://numismatics.org/ocre/ (or maybe it can be in future)?

All the best for 2022!
Anton
